• I am the opinion that schoolboys should wear shorts at all time without any exeption summer and winter.
When boys are in shorts, it expresses that they are more youthful, sportive, obedient and healthier.
Shorts at school are a sign that boys are still boys and not little adults.
To be in shorts strengthen the selfconfidence and it promotes character bulding, as a boy has tho stand the situation.
  • Short trousers on boys is far more practical for a number of reasons; boys grow out of longs quickly, they get soiled and ripped and are far more expensive to replace. I do not advocate any boy wearing snug fitting and too short shorts but I do think smart tailored long (knee length) shorts and knee socks should be the norm for all schoolboys right up to 19 years old
  • I think that Katie has just made this story up
  • i think you right kate has made this up .
  • My 11 year old son wears grey shorts for school and will wear them for 2 more years until he is 13. Not his choice to wear them, but as a parent i have made the decision he will not be allowed to wear long trousers until 13. At times he will sulk and protest at me for being made to wear shorts. My reply to him, tough. I see no reason for spending money every month on ripped trousers caused by falling over in the playground.
  • you are so wrog makeing your 11 year son wear grey shorts untill his 13 the kids at school will take micky out of him your out of order your son shound taken away from you and put in to care he would better off.
  • I cannot beleive your head wiring program! Obviously God had a day off. Go away and get a life! Oh and learn how to spell and punctuate!
  • Yes boys should be able to wear school shorts to school there are plenty of supermarkets and shops who sell them. They are practical, healthy and look smart. don't see why not.
  • When guys wear shorts in winter it's not to look cool its because the cold does not make our legs uncomfortable.

Culturing a youth to be neat and tidy best serves to fostering this as keeping oneself well groomed and smartly attired is essential to ordering the mind and so developing a proper sense of dutifulness as well as self-respect. This centers on the matter of decent dress and appearance, something sorely lacking nowadays with most youths.

Lamentably, today’s societal changes in lifestyle and fashion attitudes together with economics, has made boys being dressed in smart looking suits and traditional school uniforms not merely “old-fashioned” but impractical if not unfeasible as well for most people, not to mention unwanted; alas, resulting in this as the norm for boys having become essentially historic. However, a lad’s clothing need not be fancy or expensive to fittingly serve in the sense being considered here. Tastefully styled simple and serviceable clothing as apposite and needful will do nicely. Regardless, it is imperative that short pants be a requisite part of all outfits at all times.

Doubtlessly, the idea today of having youths dressed in short pants, as a standard will be regarded with askance as being “eccentric” if not perverse, which is unfortunate since there are actually quite fair reasons confirmed (as previous generations sensibly understood) for their being fundamental in effectively taming a lad to ensure his character development successful.

Foremost, shorts are the most aesthetically pleasing attire on youths, as well as being the most practical, so making one donned in them look perfectly smart and fitting. In addition, there are also the healthful benefits of having the legs exposed to the sun and air. These justifications should be obvious, but how and why shorts serve, as an aid to building their character should be no mystery, either, as it’s really quite basic.

It is the nature of all adolescents to be overly concerned sometimes even vain about their looks and how they are perceived due to their appearance. There is also the factor of the sophomoric predisposition to develop cheeky and bigheaded attitudes after puberty blooms, particularly with boys. Regarding youths, these undesirable traits can nicely be turned to work to effecting constructive change; and this is expediently both well and best accomplished by simply maintaining them barelegged.

The reason for this is plain. Especially for a youth – for causes that should be explicable – going with well-exposed legs makes for an inimitable self-conscious sense both physical and mental. Accordingly, keeping one so maintains them keenly aware of themselves and so ever more mindful of their attitude as well as behavior, and reminded of his state by its being made evident; thus serving to instill the docility necessary to achieving a favorable character.

To ensure the affect of this will effect properly and thus be rightly appreciated, the shorts must be "proper shorts” (one’s with no more than a two inch inseam) not the awful long baggy style “shorts” of current fad. Short shorts ideally reinforce a youth’s self-awareness rightly evocatively affecting, thus they most meaningfully effect inculcating the self-control that results in good comportment.

Let me close this explication with two interesting notes for those who think this commentary merely that of a reactionary old fogy:

In various recently conducted surveys of public thinking on a broad mix of topics to see what “constants” might show up, when people were asked what their ideal image of a schoolboy was, the one most often stated was that of a lad donned in a classic (“British”) uniform with short pants. (This does beg the question of why, then, has boys being dressed so become almost extinct, but answering it is beyond this essay’s focus.)

Moreover, all the questionable commentary attesting to the value of keeping youths in shorts aside, actual research has also shown far more males than not trained in this manor have later acknowledged they came to respect and appreciate the lessons they learned from this way; and, perhaps ironically, to also come to actually like going in shorts, and missed wearing them once no longer worn.

Testimony like this would seem to confirm the alleged merits of this practice are valid.

And so, I close my case in this regard.

* * *
• I tend to disagree with the view that a boy 13-19 should wear very short shorts; two to three inches above the knee yes absolutly!
  • i like having my legs freely exposed n open!i hate the restriction of extra pant length in longer pants.i think wearing shorts as part of school uniform til up to 20 isnt an exageration,so long as u dont grow up too fast.and yes,im a boy.
  • boys look stupid in shorts
  • You sound stupid!
  • no,girls look stupid in shorts, thats the actuality.yet so many of them think its trendy to wear tight denim shorts everywhere, its gross.seems like a hijacking of fashion style, abeit a bad one.if boys look stupid in shorts and skirts, then are they restricted to only wearing long trousers all the time?thats somewhat a violation of freedom
  • boys should be able to wear what they want even skirts in fact i think boys look smart in skirt / kilt, than in shorts or trousers
  • i dont think we'd go that far as to have boys put on skirts, unless its traditional attire like scottish ones.
  • I believe Boys should have the choice to wear either long or short pants to school after all if the colours comply with the dress code what difference would it make and at any rate shorts would be more comfortable in summer
  • Your son of 12 years old is in secondary school year 7 or 8, in the UK I assume. Is he the only boy in short trousers?
  • both my boys wear grey shorts to school winter and summer
thay are age 12 and 10
• i feel that you are wrog sending your sons in shorts age 12 and 10 to school at any time of year.do you make your sons ware shorts all the time?
  • 12 years old boys are in secondary school in the UK and I would think that few boys would be seen in short trousers.
  • Here in Sri Lanka the boys wear short trousers until 14 and there is no problem. In year 10 they wear white trousers. Girls wear white dresses and most wear T sandals and keep their hair in long platts. It quite impossible to imagine that boys in short trousers would be tempted to drink or smoke, or even have a sexual relationship with a girl. It may be seen as being less mature than those in UK but boys are boys and not seen as teenagers waiting to emulate adults.
  • I have more shorts than longs so I wear shorts most of the time. Shorts just feel better and have more freedom. Alot of my friends are in shorts most of the time all seasons. I like the short shorts some guy are wearing now.
  • Definitely for ... Shorts look cool on both guys and girls
  • i think girls should stick to their dresses, unless they are working out
  • wear shorts for all of the time
• I like pants and jackets better (I wore them and got used to it)
  • shorts are awesome, and if people want to wear them,, yes you should!
  • I am all for wearing shorts to school even in the winter. They are more economical than long pants and you can move around better in shorts. I believe you should also wear shorts that come above the knee when standing. The baggy ones are too restrictive. I am also for the idea of dress shorts for boys to wear at functiobs such as weddings or the short pants suits that boys used to wear in Great Britain. Most kids will not get that cold by wearing shorts in the winetr but they will need a coat to kep the upper body warm. I beleve it is also healthier to wear short pants.
  • i agree.baggy pants are lame.
  • In New Zealand many schools require boys in secondary school to wear grey short trousers with long socks. No one seems to object, and in winter the shorts are heavier and usually lined. Boys suits with shorts seem to have faded out in the 80s and you never see them now. At weddings you see little boys aping the adults in wearing three-piece dark suits with long trousers. I don't know why in the UK boys are against wearing short trousers at school, even in hot weather.
  • Both; unless you're wearing shorts that look like underwear. The board of education creates a school policy for a reason. They don't want young adults dressing inappropiatly. People can get the wrong impression when you're dressing like a slut in the middle of December. I always thought it was stupid that we can't wear shorts when its like 95* but no wants to see your skin...[and its only manly to wear shorts in school if you're a girl..girls in guys clothes look like dumbasses]
  • so right!many girls wear stuff that looks like underwear out in the open,i dont know why they dont feel disgraced to do that!so far ive seen no boy do something like this!
  • Shorts are very smart and practical for boys
  • Hwb
Boys at a school in Stellenbosch, South Africa, wear shorts with their uniform. It is optional. Approx 60% choose shorts. How smart and practical.
  • Who would wear pants in Africa in the first place?
